UAE Helps Children’s National Medical Center Access New Tech

In the never-ending battle of providing the best child care available, the Children’s National Medical Center has gotten support in recent years from an unlikely source: the country of the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

A Middle Eastern country located on the southeast part of the Arabian Peninsula along the Persian Gulf, the UAE has a small population (estimated 9.2 million), but is big when it comes to wealth. Despite its small size of 32,000 square miles, the UAB has prospered due to its oil and natural gas reserves. Many see the country as a rising power in the Middle East and its largest city, Dubai, has already emerged as a global city in regards to business, transportation, and tourism.

The country uses a Western-style business model despite being having a monarchy form of government. Due to its wealth, the UAE government has already spent millions on advanced technologies, but are also sharing some of the advances with others.

An example of their role as a benefactor is the Children’s National Medical Center in Washington D.C. which has received several million dollars in donations over the past few years to help fund greater use of robotics in surgery and 3D tissue printing. The latter could help recreate certain small parts of human anatomy such as eardrums by using a 3D-print of bio-tissue.

However, an even greater positive effect could emerge if the use of robotics is perfected to the point where robots can carry out some of the more routine surgeries. If robots can conduct such surgeries with minimal supervision from actual surgeons, then they could help ease the burden of surgeons in the near future. By taking over some of the more routine surgical work, robots could unintentionally free up professional surgeons to focus on more complicated procedures.

Another tech advance in which the hospital is working on, through funding from the UAE, is the Surgical Robotic System where eye-sensing cameras and mechanical arms are controlled by a surgeon sitting at a console. Through this system, some hysterectomies have reportedly been done.

Thanks to the funding from the United Arab Emirates, the medical center is hoping to advance medical care for children in new ways over the coming years.

Companies are more aware of protecting the environment too. These new methods help by allowing the digging of wells in sensitive areas with much less disturbance to the environment. Also, using an advanced 3-D Seismic equipment to do a survey before digging is important. No more guessing if there is something there to dig for. Large Mall Developer Bringing Tech into Retail Industry

The Westfield Corporation is a multi-billion-dollar retailer that operates more than 30 malls in the U.S. and the U.K. In the face of increased online competition; the company is seeking to embrace start-ups to breathe new life into the brick-and-mortar retail industry.

The retailer recently teamed up with advertising firm R/GA to help grow and promote start-up companies that will introduce new technologies into malls and develop programs that will incentivize customers to spend more time at physical shops.

New Accelerator Focusing On High Tech Start-ups

The list of companies that they have recruited includes Oak, which is a start-up that has developed an interactive fitting room mirror that lets customers interact with it and even checkout through it. Another start-up is Darkstore, which has developed a program that allows physical stores to act as local storage centers for online e-commerce companies, helping struggling retailers by providing another revenue stream.

What’s more is that the accelerator also seeks to connect these start-ups to established companies such as Macy’s and Walmart, to help them develop the industry connections they need to implement their products successfully.

R/GA will assist the start-ups with finding other investors and developing their brands and designs, and will work with them through the entirety of the three-month program, which is being held in San Francisco. All the while, Westfield Labs, a research arm of the Westfield Corporation, will be providing their tools and expertise to the companies.

The program is part of an industry-wide push to start integrating new technologies in existing malls. Kevin McKenzie of Westfield Labs said in a recent article how the company is “committed to infusing digital into our physical shopping environments to create new customer experiences.”

The Westfield Corporation is giving up to $120,000 to the start-ups in return for an up to 5% stake in the new companies. The program will end with an exclusive event where the ten companies will present their business models and products to technology and retail industry leaders and also potential investors.
